Young children go through several stages of development where they learn about art and master art skills. The random scribbles and lines children create are part of their budding art expression that will eventually lead to realistic representations of the world around them. Children follow a basic pattern of art development that should be encouraged and nurtured along the way.
The Scribbling Stage: Once a young child is able to hold and use a crayon or marker, he will begin his art development by creating scribbles. This is entitled the "scribbling stage" and is the first stage children go through. Random marks, circles and large arm movements are seen through this stage. Many children remain in the scribbling stage up to the age of 5.
The Preschematic Stage: At around 3 years of age, children become aware that their scribbles create shapes and forms. This moves them into the preschematic stage or the stage of symbols. Many times these shapes and forms begin to show representations of a person, usually with a large circle or oval along with lines for arms and legs. The shape of a circle becomes a universal symbol used for an animal, a person or other common object.
Story Time: By the age of 4, most children have begun to master language skills, which plays an important role in their art creation through the preschematic stage to the schematic stage. During this expressive stage of their art development, creating artwork that tells a story is important and wanting to share their artwork and stories with everyone is a special experience for children. The teacher encourages the child's artistic development by taking the time to listen to the child's verbal representation of his artwork.
The Schematic Stage: By the age of 5 or 6, children have explored the scribbling and preschematic stage and are ready for the schematic stage of attempting to create realistic representations of the world around them. Children are able to recognize the understanding of space and the order of objects around them, drawing a base line to show what objects sit or stand on along with a foreground and background.
Benefits of ART for the Preschooler: Children of all cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and social backgrounds follow these developmental stages of art. Some move through the stages quicker or slower than others. Never base one child's art development by another's, as each child is unique and special. The teacher will offer lots of encouragement to assist with children's artistic development. Confidence in their artistic skills and the ability to express themselves comfortably and confidently through their art is beneficial to children's overall development and health.
